Production of the BMW Z4 M Roadster and M Coupe began in 2006, four years after the introduction of the BMW Z4. Both versions feature the 343 bhp 3.2 litre six cylinder engine from the BMW E46 M3 offering 0-62 mph in 4.7 seconds with a limited top speed of 155 mph.
Several further styling and mechanical cues are taken from the E46 M3 including the cross-drilled floating rotors, the quad exhaust, major components from the M3's suspension, and 18-inch alloys.
Whilst the six-speed manual gearbox is retained from the standard Z4, its gear ratios are closely matched to that of the M3. There has been substantial discussion on owners forums identifying that the gearbox is prone to 'grinding' when shifting up from first to second at high rpm. This has resulted in several owners claiming a new gearbox from BMW dealers.
The Z4 M also differs from the standard Z4 in featuring a variable M limited slip-differential, hydraulic rack and pinion steering, and a set of standard compound tyres as opposed to run-flat tyres. All of these features help make the Z4 M Coupe and Roadster to feel more 'natural' and less 'digital' compared to the standard car. In particular, dropping the run-flat tyres has improved the often criticised ride issues associated with the Z4 turning it into a comfortable long distance grand tourer as well as an out-and-out sports car.
The BMW Z4 M Coupe and M Roadster are direct competitors to the Porsche Cayman S (coupe) and Porsche Boxter S (roadster), which offer similar outputs and are similarly priced.
