BMW E60 M5

The latest version of the BMW M5, the Chris Bangle designed E60, was launched in 2006. Its 5.0 litre V10 engine produces 500 bhp, with a limited top speed of 155 mph and a delimited top speed of 205 mph and a 0-60 mph dash taking only 4.1 seconds.

The E60 M5 utilises BMW's 7-speed SMG III electrohydraulic manual transmission, offering no clutch and a steering wheel mounted paddle-shift gearchange. Like many of the technical features in the latest M5, it is possible for the driver to configure the 'ferocity' of the gear change. There are five settings, and eleven shift programs (altering shift speed, throttle sensitivity, and suspension stiffness) available, one of which is pre-configured for a track-use bias. The SMG III system also includes a 'launch control' system which automatically prepares the vehicle for maximum accelaration standing starts.

The car also features an 'M' button. Pressing the button increases output from 400 bhp to 500 bhp, sharpens throttle responses, automates the seats to 'fix' the driver in place, and turns on the head-up system which displays speed, rpm, and gearing information.

In 2007 the BMW E60 M5 Touring was introduced. It is the first M5 Touring since the E34 M5.
