BMW E28 M5

The BMW E28 M5 was the first 5-Series to earn the 'M5' designation. Launched in 1985 at the Amsterdam Motorshow, the vehicle represented a huge gamble to BMW for the combination of performance, refinement, and practicality had never before been forged together in a saloon.

The chassis was derived from that of the BMW 535 that preceded it and the engine was a modified version of the M88 unit that debuted in the iconic M1. This developed 286 bhp propelling the vehicle from 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 153 mph. The M5 was hand built by Motorsport engineers first BMW's Munich factory and then later at the Garching factory.

Only 2,191 production examples of the BMW E28 M5 were created between 1985 to 1988 making it the second rarest M car behind the BMW M1.
