In 1979 the BMW E12 M535i was launched and became the first BMW sedan to be officially developed by BMW Motorsport. Five years later the first BMW M5 was launched. It's success and critical praise ensured that all subsequent 5-Series and 3-Series were honoured with the 'M' treatment.
